The Theatre, The Theatre...

Since some of us love the theatre, here's a place to chat about it. I mentioned on another thread that I had a link for really heavily discounted tickets for Broadway shows, and here it is:
http://www.playbill.com/club/offers/
Join the Playbill Club, and they'll send you some of the best deals you've ever seen. Imagine sister Act for as low as $39! Unheard of.

Also, If you like Gigi, a web series on MyDamnChannel (check it out on Facebook), you can enter a sweepstakes to win tickets to Book Of Mormon, probably the best reviewed new musical since The Producers, which includes airfare and a hotel room! :

I love seeing live theatre but the scene in LA isn't the same as it is in NY. In Los Angeles, the main theatre companies/venues are:

The Ahmanson, Mark Taper Forum, Kirk Douglas Theatre
http://www.centertheatregroup.org/

Tickets are expensive but Center Theatre Group offers what's known as "Hot Tix." Usually, a few weeks before a show you can call in and purchase a ticket for $20. They don't give out exact seating locations for this but I've been to The Ahmanson and there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Plus, you can't go wrong for $20.

There's also Pantages.

For everything else in LA, the best website for scoring discount tickets (half priced) is LA Stage Alliance.

Have you considered the ticket lottery?

A limited number of tickets for each performance will be sold through the lottery. Entries will be accepted at the box office beginning two and a half hours prior to each performance for up to two tickets.

Two hours before curtain, names will be drawn at random for a limited number of tickets priced at $32 each. Only one entry is allowed per person. Cards are checked for duplication prior to drawing. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Limit one entry per person and two tickets per winner. Tickets may be purchased in cash or with a valid credit card. Tickets are subject to availability.

Also, SW, if I'm not mistaken for the Eugene O'Neill they sell Standing Room, which is right behind the last row of the orchestra, and it's usually about $20. They won't sell it until the show is sold out, though, so you have to be flexible. And, as with the Conchords, it's easier to get a single instead of two together.

Thanks. The time and effort needed to potentially get cheap tickets doesn't seem worth it to me. I'll just get regular tickets & think of it as a small price to pay to be entertained and support Broadway. :)

I got tickets for Book of Mormon for July 2nd. I love how quiet NYC is over the summer holiday weekends so I probably would have been coming in to city anyway that weekend. :whitey:

Great, SW! I hope you have as great a time as I had. Where are you sitting?

I just got a notice from Playbill that might appeal to anyone who hasn't seen Billy Elliot. If you're a fan of Broadway, this show is a big old-fashioned musical with a huge heart, and it's a true must-see:

Oh cool thanks. I figured with the overhang I'll be about over orchestra N which doesn't look bad. Is it a smallish theater?

They say approx 1110, which is on the smaller side. It is a cozy theatre, yet I was reminded of the no leg room at Carnegie Hall. I was in the front row and couldn't cross my legs. :?
There was a biggish guy next to me who before the show stood up to arrange his coat on his seat. I don't know how he managed this, but his butt, complete with plumber's crack, (no lie!) was close to touching my face. Eeeeeeeeeeeewwwww! I kept telling myself "I'll laugh about this later", but it was the source of much tittering in my area at the time.

Oh crap I forgot about that. Those squishy seats make me grumpy and anxious. Oh well.
