Duncan Sarkies - Author of 2 Little Boys

Postby mohumbhai mania » Mon Apr 12, 2010 5:43 pm

His Two Little Boys is being shopped around as a movie potentially starring Bret McKenzie. He also wrote two brilliant episodes of FoTC - New Fans and The New Cup.

I'm getting a copy of Two Little Boys from Amazon UK, and will be more than happy to cycle it around when I'm done.

Woohoo! :D I love alibris.com! I just got a used copy of Two Little Boys for $2.53 plus $4 shipping. They've got a new copy right now for $8.80 if anyone wants to snag it before it's gone.

I'm very willing to share my copy too once I'm done with it. Just let me know if you want to borrow it.

My copy arrived in the post this morning! 8) Since the only books I should be reading right now are my university textbooks, I'll be reading it over the summer. Can't wait! :)

I sure plan to! :D OMG! It's next Friday! Are you going to stay for both shows? Will you bring a uke for signing? I'll (probably) bring my soprano. Poop...it's the only one I don't have a case for though....

Thoughts (with spoilers):

I see this as a fascinating, poignant study of two people who are so not good for each other and keep pulling each other down.

There's an almost primal attraction between Nige and Deano- the blood oaths, the tooth necklace - but it's the worst thing for them. Gav, the roommate, a self-made, self-improving guy, is from similar circumstances, but managed to think his way out of bad situations. And he could be a way out for Nigel and Deano - even Deano starts to respond to Gav's positivity. But it's like Shakespeare or a Greek tragedy in its raunchy, farcical way - both Deano and Nigel have fatal flaws that lead to their undoing. With Nigel straightening his hair and dreaming of visiting Shepherd's Bush, he's trying to rebel again Deano, but he'll never make the break. And in a way, it's crushing Deano just as much having Nigel on a leash when he won't act on his love for him. More complex that it seems.

Thanks for your review, MM. I started it last night and only got through the first chapter and was really unsure of how I felt about it.
Mine also has a much less colorful cover than yours - it only has a red car and Jemaine's quote on the cover, with a slew of miscellaneous drawings on the back. (obviously meaningful to the story).

Hopefully once I get into it more, I'll enjoy it more. :D
