What the Folk!

Seeing as a few uf us will be meeting in London next month I expect I'm not the only one hoping for a wee uke jam

As I mentioned to Venus and Zebra on FB the other day I thought it would be wise to maybe agree on a few tunes to practice so we at least know a few of the same songs.

Zebra asked for something cheerful and easy. I suggest "Ten guitars" It's simple (only 4 chords), it's definitely cheerful and also it is somewhat of a Kiwi anthem, which makes it very fitting as we're all meeting up to see PF

Ooh Ten Guitars is a good one! I've played that before after seeing Bret, Gemma and Carmel from WIUO play it too. Are we adding the Spanish/Maori strum as demonstrated in the video?

Yeah so when Zebra suggested playing upbeat songs on Facebook, a few upbeat(ish) songs I'm currently playing which spring to mind are Sloop John B (a good tutorial can be found here), 5 Years Time by Noah and The Whale (video here and uke chords here) and Build Me Up Buttercup (can be found on page 34 of the this songbook. Lots of other good songs are in this booklet too!).

Both Sloop John B and 5 Years Time are quite easy to play, Build Me Up Buttercup is slightly trickier in some parts. They're nothing to do with NZ though.

Oh yeah I forgot about Rocky and Balls/Sophie Madeleine. Would be quite funny if we played I Heart You Online or Beard Song or any other of their songs.

How about You Are My Sunshine as an homage to the NYC ukers?

And please, please have a designated taper who doesn't play so we can enjoy all of you strumming away. Oh I can't wait!

Nonch: I've been thinking on that and I really wish I was able to arrange Buffalo for a uke band cause that would rock!! I might ask my muso bro to have a crack at it

Cool, Laura. The reason I wanted to send mine was that it's transposed down to a C as the E is too high for me But there are transposing tools online for people to use if they should want it in another key

So I assume we're definitely going to play Ten Guitars and Poi E. Any others?
Also, when exactly do you think we're going to have this uke jam session because it's just occured to me that I wouldn't want to bring my uke along to the gig cos a sold out show at The Borderline gets very crowded and I'm not sure about handing in my uke to the cloakroom.
