Oh sweet Ganesha, I loved this. LOVED IT!
I nearly wet myself when Bret did his "Zoom! Zoom! Coupla cars for ya." impression of Rhys' stand-up act. It was just PERFECT! I actually had to pause it and go brush my teeth at that point because I was laughing so hard, I couldn't even breathe. Even writing about it now is sending me into hysterical giggles. Oh god. My face hurts from smiling so much. **Gently massages cheeks.**
And it always makes me feel better when I hear Jemaine talk about how fundamentally lazy he is. As an deeply lazy person myself, it's nice to know that I'm not alone. I loved hearing James talk about trying to convince his musicians to start earlier than ten o'clock in the morning - NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, MATE. The boys chuckling about how he made them stay until exactly six o'clock cracked me up, too. It reminds me of being a kid in school again, trying so hard to sit still in my seat and get through those last few minutes, but just dying to get out of there. I can still feel that bored, anxious, brain-itching sensation when I think about it. It's so awful. You can absolutely imagine James being Very Strict with his boys, can't you? No skiving off allowed. And they totally get detentions if they're late.
As Prettyrobyngirl mentioned upthread, although we've all read extensively about how relentless the pace of production was, seeing the behind-the-scenes footage really brought home, in a visceral way, just how exhausting it really was. As viewers, even very interested and well-informed viewers, it's hard to grasp just how much work goes into making a show like this. And the pressure! My god! It's no bloody wonder Bret started having panic attacks. I absolutely loved seeing them put together the music for Mermaids ("We're trying to make it sound [YAWN] awesome. [YAWN] At the moment it sounds [YAWN] mediocre."), but it really brought home how much careful, painstaking work goes into making every last stitch of the show the best it can be.
I'm just so damn grateful. I know how flipping cheesy this sounds, and I wish I could think of a cooler way to put this, but the Conchords have brought such a lovely light into my life. I can say (with blushing embarrassment) that I'm a happier person just knowing that they exist.
God, I sound like such a dribbly drunk, don't I? "I jush love you guysh sho mush, I really do. It's sho real, man, and you guysh are totally like my besht friendsh. Yeah. Love you."
**Falls face first into the peanuts.**
