Ok, so Ive gone all geeky and I dont mean to be a kill joy either. I was so curious about the history of this event & I went nosing around and found this video & little blurb about Bainbridge.

The death toll will never be known exactly; around 120 people died that night. Guide Sophia later estimated that 62 people had survived the night with her in her whare. Five members of schoolmaster Charles Haszard’s family perished and a young English guest named Edwin Bainbridge died under the falling verandah of the Rotomahana Hotel.

Hey, no way!! 4ever, you're the best! :D
I had no clue that Bainbridge was a real person (our one's cuter!)

And, from memory, I think you see him die on the veranda in the movie.
It's all about the music.

How sad! Bainbridge's note was so well-written, and reminded me unfortunately of victims of the World Trade Center and United Flight 93, who got phone messages out to their families before they perished. I can see why Bret would have wanted to portray him. This man showed such grace under the direst of circumstances. :(

Sorry to be so flippant, but I imagine Bret's thought process might have been something more along the lines of "Hooray! Paid acting work!"
It wasn't exactly Hamlet

Oh no, I'm sure that was exactly his thought process, but the story must have made it more appealing.

So glad you found this gem, hel, and you were able to capture some of it for us, Great H. :thumb:

Bainbridge was just 20 years old when he died. I found a couple more pics but wasnt sure if it was ok to post cos it's off topic. There is a link to 2-3 pics of his memorial & the link is http://nz.images.search.yahoo.com/image ... n&type=JPG

Hel, no worries. It's all good. I'm sure that was Bret's thought process, it's an acting job & an opportunity to portray a significant person.

Yeah, you guys are right. I hadn't realised that his part was based on a real person, and perhaps a fairly well known one..? It is cool that he got to portray him :)

So it was a portrayal of a historical event and a real character. Wow... thank you for looking that up, 4ever.

And only 20. (20 yr olds seem to have been radically different, in those days, don't they? )

Still love the fact that Bret cropped up randomly like that during your holiday, hel.
That's the conclusion that I've come to, but...

That stuff was cool 4ever. Nice find. 8) Eeep, now I feel ever so slightly guilty for laughing at the death of a real person.

Great H sent me a few more bits. :D

Aw, the feet would have been funny, but of course it wasn't meant to be... :worry:
