it's ridonk that it has no distributor. It's a cheap movie. Just word of mouth and YouTube could get some theatres filled. I may have to buy the eNZed edition when it comes out.

I hope so. I hope the Walker or the U of Minn does some kind of bill with it.

On another note, I am amazed at how many people I run into know about Eagle vs. Shark. Ok, not as many as say, Star Wars, but more often than not lately when I say something like "you know Taika Waititi, the guy who directed Eagle vs Shark?" people go, "yes! loved that movie!"

The disc has is a commentary track by Taika on it. Well, half of it is by Taika - the other half is by 'Alamein', so he's talking to himself quite a bit!

Not surprisingly, Taika & 'Boy' has picked up a bunch of awards at the Qantas Film & TV awards here the other night (very prestigious!), and also in the slightly less glamourous (but no less important) Qantas Film & TV craft awards...

Wow, Taika sweep! I can't wait to see this. It seems odd that I could order it on DVD and perhaps watch it on my computer even as it is released in theaters here in America. Was that an unusually quick release to DVD, GH?

Yeah I think it was relatively quick. It's still playing the odd session in a few cinemas!
Oh I wonder how it did in Australia it only opened there at the end of August. Must go check!

Taika looks quite smashing at the awards in his monochromatic "look" and more than a little mischievous in that first photo of him backstage with his award. Thanks for posting the link! Lordy, how thin can a tie get?

So I went ahead and bought Boy on DVD (with lots of help from Great H! ). Gosh, where do I start? As I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film! I thought that I might have spoilt the movie a bit for myself having read so much about it and by watching video clips here and there but so many aspects of the film were new to me (thumbs up to all of you who have watched it and haven’t given much away, I’ll try to do the same!).

First of all, the film was more emotional than I was expecting. Taika sure does know how to tug on those heartstrings! The kids are absolutely adorable and you just want the best for them but they go through some tough times and go on a real journey growing up and as viewers of the film, we go on that journey with them. Sad times aside, there are very funny scenes in the movie too as shown in the trailer with Boy’s Michael Jackson moves and Alamein’s failed Dukes of Hazzard attempt! Oh and I loved some of the kids' names. Another classic creative Taika trait was shown through the use of animation and fantasy sequences of Boy’s perception of his dad which I thought were perfectly entwined with scenes throughout the film.

The cast were excellent, every actor played their part really well. James Rolleston was a true pro at playing Boy as the sweet innocent kid as well as the darker scenes. It was great getting some insight into the way of life for some in NZ at that time. Oh and I didn’t watch the Poi E music video because I wanted to see all the Thriller/Haka dance for the first time during the film. Loved it!

So yeah, truly fantastic stuff! Bravo Taika! I hope it gets major distribution in the UK and worldwide cos it definitely deserves to be seen on a global scale. Can’t wait to watch the film the film over and over again and with commentary.

Did you catch the goat at the end of the credits?

Haha, yes! Nice touch. I did like Boy's relationship with that goat. After a certain incident, it was sweet seeing Rocky helping Boy out, an example of their brotherly love. The other kids that Boy hung out with and those from his school including the bullies showcased their own characters well too. Loved the Maori smurf Would have been great to see more of them in the film but that probably would have deviated from the whole plot.

I remember Taika talking about having difficulty casting Alamein. I can see why but Taika was just perfect for that role and I can't see how anyone else would have been able to pull it off. It was interesting seeing how the roles reversed when it came to Alamein and Boy's relationship cos there were times when you couldn't tell who was the child! Taika didn't make Alamein turn out to be a completely bad guy though as he did show instances of having some heart.

Yeah I don't think the film would've worked if Alamein didn't have some positive qualities too. I'd forgotten about Maori Smurf! And I still laugh at that Dukes of Hazzard thing - I may or may not have tried that myself back in the day... *cough*
I can't see anyone else playing Alamein as well as Taika did either...
