Receiving messages

Postby Chica » Thu Dec 20, 2007 1:35 am

Hi,

At the start I received an email whenever a topic I was watching got a new reply, but for the past week or so they haven't been coming. I checked the spam folder and they're not in there either, but every time I look at a topic it still says I am watching it.

I'm having the same type of problem that Chica had in Dec. I just noticed today that a couple of sites I regularly read and post messages on had been active for a couple of days, but I got no notice of messages. I logged on this afternoon and had no problem clicking the link to get to the message sites of several different threads. This evening was a different matter - from my e-mail site, I clicked on the link to see the message, but I got the slappy hand and the click sound, which meant no access. I had to leave my e-mail and come directly to the forum to see the messages. I also can't click any link available on the forums. I tried to view the Texas Odyssey documentary, as I have in the past, but I got the same slappy hand with the click sound. This has never happened to me before. Sometimes I've had access to emoticons blocked, but not message links.
I hope I'm posting this in the right place.

Pay no attention to the last post! Whatever was wrong is wrong no more.
Everything was back to normal and working fine this evening. :D

We are having some buggy issues with the forum atm and its being upgraded to the latest version.

Losing new accounts also so had to disable admin activation also and let the user complete it, hence spam posts appearing on and off. I'm trying to check in to delete them as often as I can but small baby does not give me much time, so bear with me.

Cheers

Thanks, Sherry. I know how time-consuming a young one can be. Wait til they're 26!!!
But thanks for getting back to me. Everything seems okay now, except I thought I was on the wrong site when I first got an e-mail notificaton today - Wow! New colors, new stuff to play with - very neat.
If we can do anything to help you with the spammers, let us know. Otherwise, do what you need to do with the little one, and we'll see you when you can grab a moment.

Ditto here.
Is it because of spammers, and by the time we read it they've been deleted?

Oh! Yis that's most likely the reason coz all the emails I got were from old threads and those are the ones the spammers bump up.

Yes, I'm wiping out the spam as you all sleep.

This spam is becoming annoying. It seems nearly every other day I've got a minumum of 5 messages linked to old threads bumped up by spammers.

It's not so great having to go through and delete it, either. But have patience. I can't ban, I can only delete, and until Sherry has a computer again -- not to mention a home -- she's got limited time and ability to ban.

Yes the spammers are annoying but there are limits to what I can do with the board software as it is. Bog standard. I may be able to find something else I can install to it to help but otherwise I have to just keep going as I am.

All I can suggest is, if you are a regular visitor to the forum and you don't like the few spam posts that cause an email alert maybe disable the email alerts. If you are coming here to check the forum anyways.....

I don't want to really shut the forum down or make it non viewable to people who are not registered (I find that off putting and unfriendly for a large site) and so shall do what I can in other ways.

Once I am back home and have my own computer again I shall look into things and try to see if there is something more I can do. Probably go back to admin approval for the forum sign up- process. Spammers don't usually get through that. Right now RL is taking priority over this website. The first time since I began it that that has really actually happened. Until Galen was born I always always gave this site hours and hours of my time and energy. I think I deserve a break and to have a bit of a life now ;)

Yup actually that's what I figured I'd do, particularly with old threads, there is really no reason for me to have them bookmarked anymore.

I wondered why the forum could be viewed by non registered members but I guess that explains your position. I do find it unusual though. It kind of feels like the whole world is lurking - not that I'm paranoid or anything. :eh:
