Yeah yeah yeah What did you think of the doco? I assume you've seen it?

Yeah- I just finished it. What fun, I'm so glad I finally got to see it. There were a few awkward moments, but still great fun. I know this was done a few years back, the boys were on the verge of breaking out, internationally speaking. I wonder what they(Peter Jackson, et al) think of them now?? I did love the end with everyone interpreting Bret's pout. His Dad's was the great but I loved Billy Boyd and Ian McKellen's impersonations. Is that really his brother? They have the same eyes, but not the same hair.

Of course, seeing Elijah Wood talking about him, makes me want to kick myself. The night before FOTC played at the Red Eyed Fly, Elijah Wood was at the club. The music was all heavy metal and the crowd was very light, so I was bored silly at the door. I wasn't paying attention when he walked up. He was holding out his badge to me(so very polite) and smiled. Stumped for words, I just said "Hi there, go on in". BTW- he is hobbit size and his eyes are that big! I wish I would have had my s*** together and told him that FOTC/Bret was playing the next night. That would have been so cool. <<<is mentally kicking my own ass...>>>

I'd forgotten about the elf porn And loads of other things. I'm oddly nostalgic about Figwit in a weird way now. Still have no desire to see it though

That was fantastic! Loved the audition tape! Loved the early-morning call from his agent and the surprised but sleepy look on his face. Hysterical! Loved lots of other bits that have now slipped my mind. Great seeing /me, aka Tanya, too! Now I want to hear Vending Room some more. Ah, the elusive non-CD Video Kid tracks!

I thought it was too cute. I found myself smiling and giggling and feeling insanely jealous. Well, maybe not insanely jealous, but a teensy bit green. Because I stalked/still stalk TORN and knew about Edinburgh and I was sooooo disappointed that I was a poor, unemployed college student and couldn't get to Edinburgh when it was posted that beloved Figwit was going to be there. And it was great because I remember reading about all of this as it was going down so its fun to be able to see some of it. Didn't know Black Seeds played the premier... I wonder if my ancient laptop (where all of my stuff from that time is stored) will start up so I can see if I have any pics of them saved...

On the documentary itself: Dom was a highlight, as I totally expected him to be (he stole the show in the commentary on the LOTR dvds... I can't watch it now without hearing some of his comments...) As was Sir Ian. Loved the pouting at the end, I think Jemaine did the best one... And Vending Room is awesome! Why did that not make the cd?! Is there an mp3 somewhere or on an EP I can buy?

As a side note though, Sherry, you are exactly as I pictured you... You know like when you read a good book and you get a picture of the characters in your mind... That's pretty much what I felt. Hugs and thanks again for sucking me further into this awesome world!

Just glad you enjoyed the whole Figwit thing as much as I did back then. I long ago closed the door on it all but its nice people can still enjoy the story.

Hmmm... I suppose I would be 'guest'... lol! I'm a total lurker in all sense of the word... I suppose that since I'm coming up on 10 years, I probably should register... I did email in news items a couple times... Don't stress though, I promise to keep your other secret identity secret.

I used to lurk on onering.net quite a bit but I must've posted at least a few times because I remember I went to see ROTK with someone else from the boards - it seemed like we were the only ones in the cinema that recognised Bret when he had his Figgie moment! It was great fun at the time! I was more a film fan than a Tolkein fan though so once the films were over I spent time on other boards – but I'm glad I found my way here eventually thanks to our lovely Bret!
I'm also kicking myself watching the doco because I didn't know about the BlackSeeds then either, and I must've been quite close to that stage where I was standing
But what I particularly liked about the doco tho was seeing the development of FOTC (which is where my true allegiances lie of course!) and how Figgie actually served them as a bit of a springboard. That coupled with the awesome charisma and talent we all know about was always going to make them a success eh?!

I'm sure I asked this years ago and have now forgotten the answer, but how was the eventual connection made between Bret and Figwit? I'm still impressed that he got noticed at all in the film, but that someone eventually worked out who he was in real life is particularly amazing!

That would be Iris and myself there. We both noticed him (for different reasons) and both came back to TORn and she posted about how hot this elf was I of course saw it differently and we had a lot of laughs posting about him and she coined the name Figwit.

We then worked together on the Figwit FAQ and the website. Our humble lil website where we had a laugh at Figwit's expense (and ours). Our little musings wondering who played Figwit never thought they would find an answer. Then somehow it became front page news on TORn. Hundreds of thousands of hits later and Bret was at a party one night, somewhere in Wellington and some of his mates called him over to the computer and showed him our website. He said he knew we were joking when he saw the little red arrows pointing to the back of his head in screen caps

Then the local Welly press tracked him down (being LOTR related and in Welly people followed stuff and everyone knew everyone), it went worldwide, we found Figwit, or the person pretending to be called Bret McKenzie. Hannah and Stan contacted me about making the docu and Stan coming to the UK to film the Conchords at the Ed Fringe, asked if he could interview me, ended up staying at my place a few days, then Iris and the others agreed to meet him in Edinburgh, be interviewed and so on. Stan also went to Israel and stayed with Iris (in the name of research).

Stan pretty much spent half his life working on this docu and it kindly moved away from being too much about us and was more about Bret (which was cool by us). Iris and I were both really surprised and chuffed that Bret wasn't just an extra or a wannabe actor but was actually a talented musician and dancer (among other things). Made it all kind of cooler to know he could actually do something. The Conchords were an added bonus and they got a lot of interest then thanks to Figwit. I am sure now though Bret is happy to not be called it anymore
