Starmart Ad starring Jemaine

Postby dandy lyons » Sat Apr 04, 2009 5:54 am

I didn't see this posted elsewhere so...

Directed by Adam Strange, this commercial is part of a hilarious campaign for Startmart that tracks the progress of a group of young surfers on a summer road trip in their faithful station wagon, Big Val. Written by the hilarious Glenn Wood and art directed by Carl Van Weyk, the commercials were a huge success in New Zealand until the Starmart parent company in Singapore saw them and thought the young heros and heroines were too 'drug addict' looking and pulled them off air??!!??

They needed more J-dog, less drug addict. How does the world not realize this is the way to solve every problem.

My friend also pointed out that the typeface used in the word "Need" at the end makes the "N" look like a "W". :hrm:

:roll2: That's kind of awesome. Though I hope "big" never actually makes an appearance in any nickname I may have. :D

Yis, the first thing I thought was they all had some serious munchies going on! Pretty pathetic of StarMart to pull them if they were popular...did they think they'd be overrun with druggies becasue of it? Sheesh...they just looked like cool stoners.

You must remember the sage and timely wisdom of the children's book: "If You Give a Stoner a Commercial". It foretells such horrors in disturbing detail.

Ha ha! And, perhaps those mucky mucks in Singapore never read the enlightening volume, "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Twinkie After She Got Stoned and Went To Starmart". Clearly a precedent has been set.

Val - I promise I will never call you Big Val. But you're right, that is kind of awesome. *high five*

HAHA! Clearly, those in the Parent Company are too well-acquainted with what brings on the munchies and were made extremely paranoid by the response.....
