What the Folk!

I thought it was about time that the forum has its own litte place for our uke players to gather and chat about all things uke and how to play.

So feel free to introduce yourself here in this thread and let people know how far along learning/playing the uke you are, what kind of uke you have and what sort of music you like to play.

Then jump in and start threads on whatever takes your fancy. I'll start a few so as to have permanent threads for what will probably be regluar ongoing convo. For the rest, post as you need

I got interested in the uke a few years ago when the WIUO started up and got me hooked like so many others. I've been slacking in my playing this past year, due to moving to another country, but I'm determined to get back into the swing of things. I have a lovely little Kala soprano, aka Steve, who is just dying to be picked up and played more regularly.

I'm a real newbie. I've been playing on my son's uke for a couple of weeks, but he became greedy and I finally had to get my own two days ago I got the cheapest one possible, a Morgan soprano. After having another go at my son's Mahalo I found out I should probably have spent the extra few kroner on a decent beginner, so yesterday I ordered a Mahalo soprano

I playing the uke. I bring it everywhere and I love learning! Having basic guitar skills probably help me a lot

So is the uke supposed to have a name? Or is that just you, Indy?

I don't currently own a ukulele or know how to play but I'm planning on buying one soon. I used to work at this town square called The Village in Claremont and on my breaks, I would sometimes visit a shop/museum that had all these folk instruments on display. I think that is what may have sparked my interest. But at the time, I was more interested in theremins so I shelled out $400 on a theremin at a different store. I don't have much of a musical background (unless you count making noise with a theremin) so I think a ukulele might be a good instrument to start out with since I hear they are easy to learn.

I got the fruity uke but I'm looking for another, better, uke for after I get better with the Mahalo...

But as for right now, I'm completely a novice. I'm just ordering that book now, indigo, that you (and Age Pryor) recommended

I didn't realize Mahalos were so inexpensive! I'll have to look into that book that Indigo recommended.

I looked for the Kiwi Ukulele book, but amazon UK didn't have it and that's as far as I got atm Currently just practicing using whatever I can find at www.ukulelehunt.com

So bored, just want to get home for quality uke time - had to hide it from boyfriend on way out (pretended was taking in parcel for neighbour)

It's kind of pricey ordering all the way from NZ (I just spent all my money on ukes )

I'm taking some tabs with me to practice in the car on our way to the south of Norway today. My husband can hardly wait to spend 5 hours in a confined space with two ukes and a guitar It'll be like the phones4u ad, only slightly cooler ..and much, much longer

Thought I had better hide it ( have room on top floor filled with all my junk - boyfriend rarely in there will be uke rooom)
